Did you know you can be happier and healthier by simply reflecting on what you’re grateful for? A recent research study by psychologists, Dr. Robert A. Emmons of the University of California, Davis, and Dr. Michael E. McCullough of the University of Miami, asked 3 groups of participants to write a few sentences each week focused on a specific topic. One group wrote about what they were grateful for, a second group wrote about what irritated or angered them, and a third group wrote about events in their lives that either positively or negatively affected them.

After 10 weeks, the people who wrote about gratitude were happier, more optimistic, and felt better about their lives. The study also found that they exercised more and were less likely to go to the doctor than those who focused on things that irritated them.

With the holiday season in full swing and a burgeoning “to do” list, stress can cause gratitude to slip your mind. Take time to ponder the many things in your life that often get overlooked or taken for granted. You’ll find contentment in appreciating your health, friends, family, the beauty of a smile, or even the world that surrounds you. It only takes 2 minutes to make your world a more thoughtful and caring place.

A few tips to get you started:

  • Take a couple of minutes each morning or evening to stop, think, and write down one thing you are grateful for. You can even keep a gratitude journal.

  • Write a thank you note to someone who helped shape your life and express your gratefulness and appreciation.

  • As you reflect on your blessings, it’s also important to consider those who aren’t as fortunate as you. Think about ways you can share your happiness and gratitude with the people and organizations around you.
