The Thrilling Potential of the Tipping Point
With everything that’s happening in the world today, it’s important to value, celebrate, and idolize those who contribute to the world versus those who take as much as they can. That’s what Brent Robertson, entrepreneur and founder of Purpose Practiced, is all about. Many people go through their lives by simply reacting to what's going on around them. And in today’s world, there's no lack of things to react to. After a certain amount of time, the habit of leading our lives this way can have us believe that we don’t have much of a choice but to keep our nose to the grindstone and keep pushing forward. Talking with Greg Hammond, CFPⓇ, CPA and Scott Iles on Your Money, Your Purpose Podcast, Robertson says his company, ‘Purpose Practiced’ helps people open up and gain a better understanding of how the world operates. If we stretch our imaginations to envision an ideal future possibility for ourselves, we can break the cycle and begin making the right choices that lead us closer to the kind of life we imagine.
“We, as human beings, are designed to build a world much greater than the one we’ve created. I believe everything has prepared us for this very moment, the moment to start living up to humanity's potential.” -Brent Robertson
So, how do you begin to tip the scale toward realizing your life and financial potential? It helps to start asking yourself questions like this:
- What do I believe in?
- What matters most to me?
- What are my goals?
- Who and what am I committed to?
- What steps can I take today toward creating the future I want?
- What is the purpose or intent behind every step I take?
Exploring your purpose can transform your relationship with money and your life. When you think about everyday decisions within the context of these questions, it can help you organize and focus your actions. You’ll begin to see things differently, which can yield some amazing results. Measuring everything you do against your purpose in life frees you to stop reacting and instead be the driver; to be in a position where you’re in pursuit of something greater than yourself. You’ll be marching toward a future that's not only ambitious and abundant, but one where you're driven by a purpose that is so exciting and scary that it keeps you awake.
We all have dreams, and some of our dreams require a measure of financial success to become a reality. Often people get thrown off their game plan because something happened and their investments didn’t go the way they’d intended. “Many people toss out the playbook at this point or even give up entirely – which is the worst thing you can do”, says Scott Iles.
Have you ever had an investment gone sour and think to yourself, “Investing doesn’t work, I keep losing money?” You’re not alone! It’s happened to most people at one point or another. The key is to align your money with your purpose, don’t make emotional financial decisions based on media hype, and stick to your long-term goals.
One of the most challenging things about transitioning to a life that is less “grindstone” and more centered around your purpose—especially for those who have been through financial hardships, is the idea of adopting an abundance mindset.
Acting with an abundance mindset means operating as if you have everything you need, even if you don’t. Not just financial abundance, but humanity, generosity, friendships, family, and health. Looking at life through the lens of ‘what you have and what you can contribute’ instead of ‘what you don’t have or what you can’t contribute’ can help you realize how fortunate you are for the wonders in your life. It frees you to operate from your deepest purpose and appreciate things in a way you never have before.
No one can predict the future. And when things don’t go the way we envision, it can be disappointing. But don’t give up! The universe is abundant. When we center our thinking and behaviors on purpose and prosperity, we activate the tipping point and become unstoppable.
